A message for the 2010 Awards Program Participants
Welcome 2010 Awards Program participants! This has been a very important year for SFWP, and I thank you for being a part of it. Not only did we celebrate the tenth year of the Awards Program, but we finally brought it into the 21st century with electronic entries and a more robust online presence (such as our Facebook fan page).
This was a very experimental year, and I also want to thank each of you for your patience.
I’d like to start something of a pilot program with this page and focus on providing useful resources for Awards Program participants. This will be in conjunction with a similar project over on our “Friends of SFWP” page, but with a bit more focus on what you all need or feel should be added. It’s my goal to provide a better home for the SFWP family – which does include all of you. So don’t hesitate to contact me with ideas and feedback.
For now, here are a few resources:
Resources for Writers
- The SFWP Forums
I’d like to encourage involvement in the SFWP forums. I’ve created private boards not visible to the public where you can share your work and get critiques from your peers, or just discuss writing. The forums are somewhat primitive and underused at the moment, but I’ll be updating them in the coming months.
To block spam accounts, registration may take a few hours. Your account will have to be approved before you’re able to start posting.
- The SFWP Journal
The journal has been running since 2002. You are invited to submit your work, and our editor, Ryan Sparks, will review it. Not every story is a match for the journal, but if Ryan let’s you through then your work will be going out to a very large readership that includes fellow authors, advocates, and industry professionals.
- Professional Critiques
A good friend of SFWP, Richard Peabody, offers manuscript critique services. Peabody is the publisher of the esteemed Gargoyle Magazine, and you can find out more about him on his webpage. Tell him Andrew sent you!
The 2010 Screenplay judge, William Phillips, offers script consultation. For a fee, he provides a close reading (copy editing if it needs it) and discusses character, dialogue, structure, format, originality, etc. For more info, contact SFWP.
