I found a copy of Mr. Offutt,s "The Same River Twice" in a second hand bookstore in Los Angeles where i happened to living. It was my habit to rifle thru these stores looking for reading material that was not to found in the new designer type stores. I read that book and thought that this guy was not only a damn good writer but a great writer. Not knowing if Mr. Offutt had written any thing else I made it my mission to locate more of his writings. I have since read "Kentucky Straight" "The Good Brother" and "Out Of The Woods." I am not a writer but some of the people I knew in L.A. made their living by the written word. When I find materials that are inspiring I get a kick out of letting my friends know about them. I passed "Kentucky Straight" around to these writers and was given an education as to how difficult it was to be considered for let alone given the awards and grants that Mr. Offutt has so rightfully received. I have been touched by Mr. Offutt's writing and am happy to know that i can recignize great writing wherever and whenever I have the good fortune to find it!!!
