The selection from Rosalind's Ring by Anne Whitehouse is a superb, pellucid evocation of Jewish college life in the South during the 1950s.Its prose draws the reader in; it also has a curious, edgy, ominous quality. The direct diction and syntax make it part of that broad, great American realist tradition.

The chapter from Rosalind's Ring by Anne Whitehouse is a nostalgic journey to a time when life was simpler and more tranquil. Its focus on the Jewish community of Alabama, estimated at 9,000 or 0.2% of the state's population, gives the reader an insight into Jewish life in a place far from the major metropolitan areas of the U.S. Whitehouse's opening pages reveal a traditional mother-daughter relationship as well as a courtship pattern of a former time. All of this makes for refreshing reading, and one looks forward to the rest of the novel.

Anne Whitehouse's attention to every minute detail makes me want to read the rest of the story so I can see how the daughter of an intrusive and crafty mother fares in life. I'm curious to see what kind of marriage Whitehouse creates for this young Jewish couple; how their love survives the test of time.
