2013 Literary Awards Program: Publication?

We’ve promised publication in past Literary Awards Programs, but the fact was that SFWP is a very small indie press. I went into massive debt to publish our first four titles, starting in 2005, and am just now moving out from under that. And it’s a good time to be doing so… The publishing industry [...]

Skyscraping, by Maui Holcomb

“You know,” I said to Gwen between the snores of some guy I didn’t know, “I wasn’t always a literary celebrity.”

She sat next to me on the balcony painting her nails for the fourth time that night. Well, morning now—we’d been awake all night again. Staccato, destructive sounds echoed from a game console inside, and the unknown guy shifted on the faded beach chaise the other side of Gwen, rubbing his nose.

“I nearly went into finance.”

2013 Literary Awards Program — Eligibility

Last time, we met the judges, now let’s take a look at eligibility. This is always a question, and I tried to clear it up a bit this year by creating this page. Basically, everyone is eligible, as long as you aren’t receiving the support of a major publisher or you’ve won the SFWP award [...]

Project 2013: Meet the Books

The Friday before the holidays, I talked about what I’m calling “Project: 2013,” where I’ve approved three full-tilt-boogie frontlist releases for 2013. Considering how all-consuming it is for a little press like SFWP to release one book a year, doing three a year should probably be carefully documented so we can supply material for the [...]

Project: 2013

I’ve long promised to do a sort of “anatomy of a book” here on the blog and follow the development of a frontlist title from inception to launch. It’s a weird journey — sometimes terrifying, sometimes exhilarating, and usually full of deadlines met at the 11th hour (or, occasionally, missed). SFWP didn’t have a frontlist [...]

2013 Literary Awards Program — The Judges

We’ve updated our Literary Awards Program pages for 2013. The contest officially starts in the New Year, but we’ve opened up the gates now…you’re free to submit your work and get the ball rolling. I’ll be going into the contest in more detail in the weeks to come, taking a look at each page on [...]

Not Fifth Avenue

It was the pounding of it, more than its liquidity, that demanded my attention, but the rain was sufficiently wet to soak me from head to toe in less than a minute. It wasn’t unusual to get “lightning-raid” storms at this time of year, usually around eight in the evening, but this one struck with a power unlike any I’d experienced in my three months in Oaxaca. My jeans and t-shirt were no match for it. Moments ago, I’d been admiring the almost-full moon against the dark sky. Now, I was looking for refuge.

Richard Currey’s The Wars of Heaven

On December 1st, we’ll be releasing our latest ebook — Richard Currey’s The Wars of Heaven, bringing this stunning collection of short stories back into print (virtually speaking) for the first time since 1999.

Christmas & Heaven

Okay…looking back to my post earlier this month, let’s see if we can knock out some of the news. We’ll start with the books. On October 1st, our sister company, Alan Squire Publishing, released Billy Christmas from first time British author Mark Pritchard. Here’s the blurb:
