About the Book:

In Family Matters, Sudha Balagopal weaves a vivid tapestry of lives caught between the pull of the past and the uncertainty of the future, opening a window to the inner workings of families both within India and the diaspora. From the humid streets of India to the sun-drenched sprawl of the American Southwest, these stories explore the quiet tremors of domestic life, and the cultural and economic issues that shape it.

Juxtaposing sorrow with beauty, Balagopal captures the needs of her characters -- their yearnings for autonomy, their struggles with displacement, ingrained patriarchy, and family expectations, and the small, defiant acts that sustain them all.

“An absolute gem of a collection. I’m not even going to try to avoid sounding cliché with the usual blurb-word suspects, because they are all true: this collection is breathtaking, sublime, and the writing is beautifully, hauntingly taut and precise. In Balagopal‘s hands, the smallest details carry immeasurable truths.”

-- Deesha Philyaw, author of The Secret Lives of Church Ladies
